UPS

UPS provide continuation of power for energy consumers. These systems are typically deployed in data centres, telecommunications companies, hospitals and other emergency services sectors where power outages or a dip in power can have detrimental and/or costly consequences. In service critical environments, back-up power sources are usually connected to the grid and electrical generators that will automatically start in the event of a power cut.

In all these systems, there will be a short interruption of power that could cause significant damage to systems. The on-battery run-time of most UPS sources is relatively short but sufficient enough to start up a backup generator to bridge the gap in power supply, or properly shut down electrical equipment that requires protection.

For 2-hour load shedding power outages, UPS with enhanced battery charging capabilities are required as well as large battery banks. While traditional UPS batteries were not designed for frequent cycling, solar batteries are more suitable in such a case.
